Amsterdam is the capital and most populous city of the Netherlands, with a city population of approximately 900,000 and a metropolitan population of about 2.5 million. The city is a major European financial and business hub, home to the Amsterdam Stock Exchange — one of the oldest in the world, founded in 1602 — and the European headquarters of many multinational companies including Netflix, Tesla, and Uber. Amsterdam is also renowned for its canal system (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), its world-class museums including the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, and its cycling culture.
Amsterdam operates on Central European Time (CET), which is UTC+1 in winter, and Central European Summer Time (CEST), which is UTC+2 in summer. Amsterdam shares its timezone with Berlin, Paris, Rome, Madrid, and most of continental Europe. The Netherlands adopted CET in 1940 during the German occupation of World War II, replacing the previous Amsterdam Time (UTC+0:19:32).
Amsterdam observes Daylight Saving Time as Central European Summer Time (CEST). Clocks spring forward one hour on the last Sunday of March and fall back one hour on the last Sunday of October. During CEST, Amsterdam is at UTC+2. During winter, it is at UTC+1 (CET).
