Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. With a population of approximately 5.3 million in the greater metropolitan area, Sydney is Australia's financial and commercial capital, home to the Australian Securities Exchange and the headquarters of many of the country's largest corporations. The city is internationally recognised for its iconic landmarks — the Sydney Opera House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge — and for its natural harbour, which is one of the most beautiful in the world. Sydney hosted the 2000 Summer Olympic Games.
Sydney operates on Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), which is UTC+10 in winter, and Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT), which is UTC+11 in summer. Note that Sydney's summer is the Northern Hemisphere's winter — DST in Sydney runs from October to April, the opposite of Northern Hemisphere DST. This means that Sydney's offset from London and New York changes twice a year, and the changes do not coincide with Northern Hemisphere DST transitions.
Sydney observes Daylight Saving Time. Clocks spring forward one hour on the first Sunday of October and fall back one hour on the first Sunday of April. During AEDT (summer), Sydney is at UTC+11. During AEST (winter), it is at UTC+10. Note that Sydney's DST season is the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere.
