Mumbai is the financial capital of India and the most populous city in the country, with a metropolitan population of approximately 21 million. Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is the headquarters of India's major financial institutions including the Reserve Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange (Asia's oldest stock exchange), and the National Stock Exchange. The city is also the centre of Bollywood, the world's most prolific film industry by number of films produced annually. Mumbai's Dharavi neighbourhood is one of the most densely populated urban areas in the world, while the city's Bandra-Kurla Complex is home to the Indian offices of many multinational corporations.
Mumbai operates on Indian Standard Time (IST), which is UTC+5:30. India uses a single time zone across the entire country, despite spanning nearly 30 degrees of longitude. The half-hour offset was chosen in 1906 as a geographic compromise. India does not observe Daylight Saving Time, making IST constant year-round. The UTC+5:30 offset means that Mumbai is always 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of UTC, making it one of the few major world cities with a non-whole-hour offset.
Mumbai does not observe Daylight Saving Time. India has never adopted DST. Indian Standard Time (IST) is UTC+5:30 year-round, with no seasonal adjustment.
