Why Doesn't the UAE Observe Daylight Saving Time?
The United Arab Emirates has used a fixed UTC+4 offset since the federation was established on 2 December 1971. Unlike Europe and North America, the Gulf region has never adopted Daylight Saving Time — and for good reason.
The UAE sits at approximately 24°N latitude, close to the Tropic of Cancer. At this latitude, the difference between the longest and shortest days of the year is only about 4 hours — far less than the 8-hour swing experienced in northern Europe. The energy savings from shifting clocks are therefore minimal.
There is also a practical business argument: Dubai is one of the world's busiest international transit hubs, handling over 90 million passengers per year. A fixed timezone simplifies scheduling for airlines, financial markets, and multinational corporations that rely on Dubai as a bridge between Asian and European business hours.
The same logic applies across the Gulf: Oman, Bahrain, and Qatar all use fixed UTC+4 offsets. Saudi Arabia uses UTC+3 (Arabia Standard Time) — also fixed year-round. The entire Arabian Peninsula operates on stable, predictable time, which is a significant competitive advantage for the region's financial and logistics sectors.
