ABOUT HAWAII-ALEUTIAN TIME
Hawaii Standard Time (HST) is the timezone used by the state of Hawaii and is fixed at UTC−10 year-round. It is one of the most distinctive timezones in the United States because Hawaii is the only US state that has never observed Daylight Saving Time in the modern era. The state was formally exempted from the federal Uniform Time Act in 1967, and has maintained its permanent UTC−10 offset ever since.
The "Hawaii-Aleutian" designation in the timezone's official name refers to the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, which share the same base UTC−10 offset in winter. However, unlike Hawaii, the Aleutian Islands do observe Daylight Saving Time, switching to HADT (UTC−9) in summer. This creates an unusual situation where two geographically distant regions share a timezone name but diverge in practice for roughly eight months of the year.
Hawaii's permanent UTC−10 offset means it is always two hours behind the US West Coast in winter and three hours behind in summer (when California observes PDT). The state is five hours behind New York in winter and six hours behind in summer. This large and variable gap with the continental US is a practical consideration for businesses, travellers, and remote workers connecting between Hawaii and the mainland.
The Hawaiian island chain spans roughly 2,400 km (1,500 miles) from the Big Island in the southeast to Kure Atoll in the northwest, yet the entire state uses a single timezone. This is partly because the islands are relatively close in longitude compared to a continental state, and partly because the social and economic ties between the islands make a unified timezone practical.
